September 16 -20 Learning Outcomes Math Compare and order numbers Express the relationship between two numbers,  using <, > or =   What Did  Students Do? This week, students continued their learning around place value. Students investigated how to use greater than, less than and equal to symbols while comparing numbers. Ask your child to tell you how the symbols < and > can be understood as balance scales.  This image may help their explanation: Students also ordered numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. In small groups and partner groupings, students manipulated number cards in least to greatest order, created mathematical statements using symbols for greater than, less than, equal to, and they played games to build the greater number or identify a number than can be found in between.  Thank you to all of the families who attended our Meet the Teacher night. It was great to connect with you. I hope you enjoyed se...

September 9 -13 Learning Outcomes Social Studies Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how the physical geography and natural resources of Canada affect the quality of life of all Canadians. What Did  Students Do? This week in Social Studies, students had an opportunity to show what they know about Canada's geography. They were invited to draw a map and make a list of what they already know about Canada's provinces, territories and capital cities. Students attempted to draw a map, and note cities and provinces in their visual journal. This was a great way to show where students are starting with their knowledge about Canada's geography. Then, students had an opportunity to look at a map of Canada, learn the names of provinces, territories and capital cities. Students watched videos and and even heard a fun song. Ask them to tell you more about this. Students coloured and labelled their maps.  It was a great week of learning!  Important Dates: Sept...

September 3-6 Learning Outcomes Math  Students analyze patterns in place value -express numbers within 10 000 000  Phys Ed Demonstrate decision making through the application of strategies and tactics. Demonstrate respect for the contributions and perspectives of others when working together to make decisions or achieve team goals.   What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a number of new families to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. In math this week, we started by playing the game SKUNK. This is a fun game involving addition and chance! We then began our Place Value work. In small groups, students represented numbers in various different ways.  They reviewed the names of place value numbers to the left of, and including, the ones place.  Students practiced being able to write and verbalize numbers up...
