 June 16 - 20, 2025 ELA Write to inform, explain, describe, or report for a variety of purposes and audiences. Develop a main idea or topic supported by facts, details, examples, and explanations. Summarize and organize ideas gained from multiple sources, using a variety of methods or tools. What students did: Students had two projects they were working on this week in ELA. One project was an informational piece about the history of Lacrosse in Canada. This was directly linked to our Phys-Ed residency with ELEV8 Lacrosse. Students learned about the Indigenous roots of Lacrosse through their research. They took time to learn how it has changed and how it is played today.  Students also wrote a letter to their grade 6 teacher this week. In their letters they shared their interests, about their family, their strengths in school and their areas for growth.     June 2 - 6, 2025 Physical Education and Wellness  Examine ways adventurous and challenging physical activities introduce and support motivation for skill development. Engage in adventurous and challenging physical activities that support motivation. Adjust strategies and tactics based on the strengths of participants in various physical activities and games. Assess the effectiveness of tactics in a variety of physical activity and game structures. Recognize how changes in rules influence the tactics being used. Combine movement skills to perform movement patterns in a variety of physical activities. Perform movement patterns using various types of equipment, individually and with others. June 2 - 6, 2025 Mathematics Students interpret improper fractions -fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers to their positions on the number line. -Count beyond 1, using fractions with the same denominator. -Model fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, using quantities, lengths, and areas. -Express improper fractions and mixed numbers symbolically. -Express an improper fraction as a mixed number and vice versa. -Compare fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, to benchmarks of 0,   1 2 2 1 ​ ,   and 1. What Did Students Do? Students reviewed zero fractions, proper fractions, and whole fractions. They then were introduced to improper and mixed fractions. May 26 - 31 Writing -Consider how personal interests, experiences, or perspectives might influence how texts are understood or created. -Investigate background information about the author or text creator to provide context for informational texts. -Evaluate how an author’s selection of a method or tool can impact the audience’s understanding or response to a text. What did students do? The Calgary Public Library hosts a literary arts festival each year featuring writers across a variety of genres.  Students had the opportunity to participate in a virtual session with the amazing author, Peter Brown this week. Peter Brown is the author of many children's books including The Curious Garden and Creepy Carrots. He is probably most well known for the Wild Robot Series.  Students were so excited for this special opportunity. Evaluate the validity and reliability of information and sources. Select a variety of relevant sources to inform writing. Summarize and organize ideas gained from multiple sources using a variety of methods or tools. Access and use information ethically. Publish selected pieces, incorporating graphics, captions, charts, or other text features to support a purpose or connect with an audience. What did students do? For the past few weeks, students have been researching a Canadian animal to gather information about the animal's diet, habitat, threats/predators, appearance and interesting facts.   May 12 - 14 Phys-Ed & Wellness Students demonstrate how collaboration influences physical activity. Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. What did students do? Students listened to a reading of the book, The Dancing Trees. They engaged in a discussion about the character's resilience and perseverance and how his experiences changed and impacted him. Students then reflected on their outdoor school experience and identified one or more thing(s) that they found challenging at camp. They then shared how they persevered and showed resilience in meeting that challenge and how it changed them as a person. Students recorded this in their visual journals.  Art & ELAL  Students examine how text genres, forms, and structures support and enhance communication. Sunday, May 11, 2025   May 5-9 Wellness Students examine the effect of motivation on physical activity. Students analyze and apply strategies and tactics that support improved decision making in physical activities. Students demonstrate how collaboration influences physical activity. Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students analyze responsibility and consider the impact on well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills.
