Mathematics

Students interpret improper fractions

-fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers to their positions on the number line.

-Count beyond 1, using fractions with the same denominator.

-Model fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, using quantities, lengths, and areas.

-Express improper fractions and mixed numbers symbolically.

-Express an improper fraction as a mixed number and vice versa.

-Compare fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, to benchmarks of 0, 12, and 1.

What Did Students Do?

Students reviewed zero fractions, proper fractions, and whole fractions. They then were introduced to improper
and mixed fractions. Students investigated mixed fractions and improper fractions using fractions tiles and real
world examples. They built improper and mixed fractions with fraction tiles and worked in groups to compare and relate them to benchmarks of 0, 1/2, and 1.

Ask you child:

-What is a mixed fraction?
-What is an improper fraction?
-Convert the mixed fraction 1 1/2 to an improper fraction.
-Convert the improper fraction 5/3 to a mixed fraction.
-What was the highlight of your trip to Nickle School?
-What are you looking forward to next year in middle school?
-Do you have any questions about next year?
