What did students do?

For the past few weeks, students have been researching a Canadian animal to gather information about the animal's diet, habitat, threats/predators, appearance and interesting facts. They were prompted with the question "What animal would you recommend to be Canada's next national animal? or "What animal would you recommend to be Canada's second national animal?" This helped guide their research and helped them create a persuasive paragraph about their chosen animal. Students utilized internet resources and thought critically to determine the reliability of the information found on their chosen websites. Students noted where (cited) the websites their used. They took jot notes and have organized their findings into paragraphs with a clear opening and closing sentence.

This week, students began wrapping up their research work by publishing. Students worked towards publishing their work on a trifold. They cut, organized and glued their work in a way they thought would be effective in sharing the information with others. Students chose pictures, graphics, maps and used captions to support their message.

In the coming weeks, our students will present their research and persuasive paragraphs to other students in our school. After learning about each animal and hearing the Grade 5 students share their persuasive paragraphs, audience members will be asked to vote for the animal they would like to see as Canada's next (second) national animal.
